The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 6.2
Only few know that the Google Earth application was first originated as EarthViewer 3D and wasn't, in fact, developed by Google. At the time of its first release, it belonged to Keyhole, and only later, in 2004, it was acquired by Google.
Since then it was enriched with fresh data, images and new impressive features for the users.

At the moment, there are three versions of the application: one for PC, a web-based one, and one for Android/iOS-devices. The PC version is available in different flavors: Google Earth (free), Google Earth Pro (for about $400) and Google Earth Enterprize.

First of all, the free version of this program allows you to travel around the globe visiting any country you wish and either view some photographs of memorable places alongside the information about them, or travel around the streets of a city via the Street View mode. The only drawback of the latter is that it is available for a limited number of cities. Still, if you want to have a tour around Paris or Berlin there won't be any difficulties. Besides, if the Street View is available for the city you are traveling to, you can use it like a 3D map to find your way around the city, or as a trip planner, making a video tour beforehand and following it later. Also, you can use this application to teach your kids the day-night change, providing visualization of the process, or to study together how the world looked some decades ago, using historical imagery.

Apart from our planet, you can travel around the space or visit other celestial bodies like Mars or the Moon. You can rotate and zoom them, view photos, read facts and trivia about them. There are lots of new things to learn about sitting in front of your monitor: the Moon, for example, features marks of expeditions and notable geographic places, like craters or hills.

Unfortunately, if you want to experience the full beauty and speed the application is capable of, you need a very powerful computer. If you do have one, you will get an unforgettable experience traveling on the three planets, or just around the space.

  • It provides loads of information.
  • It has up-to-date imagery.
  • Can be used as a learning source with high level of interest for children.
  • Can be used for directions.

  • Not all cities support Street View mode.
  • Can be slow on older machines.

What's new in version 7.1

- The “Enable Controller” option in user preferences is now turned off by default. This prevents red directional arrows from displaying as a result of uncalibrated joysticks and other controllers being connected to Earth at startup.
- For enhanced security, “Use HTTPS for Google connections” is now toggled on by default.
- Fixed a bug whereby the cache size rose above user-specified limits.
- Fixed a crash resulting from searching on some Windows machines.
- Updated the LEAP API to version 1.0.8.
- Reduced LEAP controller sensitivity to user hand motions. This enables a smoother flight and greater control over your flight path when using a LEAP.

What's new in version 6.2

With Google Earth 6, you can travel the streets of different cities of the world. Step back from the expanses of space on city streets - management will not give you absolutely no hassle. To consider a particular location in three-dimensional mode, go to view on the ground level.

Now you can learn 3D-models of trees in different parts of the world. In addition, the new version has become much easier to determine the availability of historical images. Download the latest version and start using the new features. For more information see the video.

What's new in version 6.2 beta

Enhanced search, including support for:
- Clearer local business and directions search results. These now appear in full HTML in the left hand panel.
- Improved quality thresholds on search results.
- Walking directions, biking directions, and transit search.
- Search layers in local business searches. In a local business search, you now see all relevant results in the 3D view, 10 results in the search panel.
- Suggest in search. As you type a search query, search suggestions appear in a drop-down menu.
- Loading search results with one click, not two.

Improved imagery rendering, including:
- Google Earth imagery is significantly more seamless, especially at higher altitudes
- Fade-in animation for imagery as it is fetched.
- Anisotropic filtering by default.
- Improved level of detail calculation for imagery tiles.

Unified network stack. Google Earth now uses the same network stack for imagery, vector content, balloon content and embedded browser content. This will avoid situations where imagery loads but balloon content does not display under certain proxy settings.

Ability to share screenshots with your Google circles from within the Google Earth client.

Unified Google login mechanism in the client.

Improved performance with 3D buildings.

Google Earth Client
- Fixed an issue where ground overlays without the tag did not render rectangles using the fill color. KML ground overlays where images fail to load will now draw rectangles using a default or user-specified fill color.
- Added the ability to create balloon HTML for locally saved images using the “Add image” button.
- Fixed proxy accessibility issues for the Google Earth Plug-in and Client.
- Added the ability to update network links in parallel on synchronous updates.

Google Earth Browser Plug-in and API
- Fixed an issue where the Google Earth Browser Plug-in generated an “ATL 10.0” error while running on Internet Explorer versions 8 and 9.
- Fixed an issue where Google Earth Browser Plug-in wouldn’t resize on Firefox version 4 and above on Mac.
- Fixed an issue where the “-” key was not working on Google Earth Plug-in on Mac.
- Fixed an issue where the AJAX loader returned false for isSupported() on 64-bit browsers that are not supported.
- Fixed the rendering order of imagery layers added through side databases.
- Fixed an issue where 3D buildings did not update with changes in view when terrain is not visible.

What's new in version 6.0

Google Earth 6 is available for the desktop in three different versions: Google Earth, Google Earth Pro, and Google Earth Enterprise. Fly anywhere to see satellite imagery, 3D buildings, 3D trees, terrain, Street View, planets and much more.

What's new in version 4.3 beta

Share information with colleagues and clients via high-resolution prints of Google Earth scenes.
Empower employees with measuring tools that enable them to measure distance, area, and radius.
Import, style, and view GIS data quickly without adding additional, costly GIS software.
Map thousands of addresses in the time it takes to find a single address with an easy-to-use spreadsheet import tool.
Benefit from email support and access to a comprehensive online Help Center.

Google Earth is a terrific program! Ummm ... unless you were expecting that you'd be able to peep in people's windows(??). It doesn't do that. Perhaps it's time for a system upgrade?? Or, at least, an overhaul?? As for me ~> 5 'YEAS' for GOOGLE EARTH!!
